What were the common people of Rome called?

The common people in Rome were referred to as plebeians. They were the working class in Rome and had very little individual power, but were able to attain some power if grouped carefully.

Plebeians were always on the front line to advocate change in the Roman government. They had a council called the People's Assembly and tribunes represented the interests of the council in the senate. The main job of the People's Assembly was to elect magistrates to run the Roman Empire. Tribunes were elected officials who had the power to veto laws. This made them very powerful in the Roman government.
