Swimming goggles were first used in the 14th century by Persian pearl divers. They became more popular during the 16th century and continued evolving into the goggles used by professional swimmers today.
The first goggles used by Persian pearl divers were made from polished tortoise shells for the lenses. This style continued its popularity until Polynesian skin divers made some goggles from wood or bamboo, which trapped the air around the eyesand created a water-tight seal. Once glass caught on, it was substituted in swimming goggles.
Even though swimming goggles had been around since the 14th century, the first goggles didn't receive a patent until 1916.
