Who were the founders of CORE?

The Congress of Racial Equality, or CORE, was founded by Bernice Fisher, James R. Robinson, James L. Farmer, Jr., Joe Guinn, George Houser and Homer Jack. The interracial organization was initially led by Farmer and Houser.

CORE was founded as a multi-racial organization in 1942 and was initially known as the Committee of Racial Equality. Begun by college students in Chicago, it was a pacifist organization whose founders were influenced by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and dedicated to changing racist attitudes of the time through nonviolent protests and sit-ins. As CORE grew, it expanded nationally and became a central part of the civil rights movement.
