FRAM oil filters were invented in 1932 by chemists Frederick Franklin and T. Edward Aldam, states the FRAM Filtration company. FRAM oil filters were the first easily replaceable oil filters sold in the market.
Franklin and Aldam coined the name FRAM by combining the first three letters of Franklin and the last two letters of Aldam, reports the FRAM Filtration company. The company continued to refine the design of its oil filters after 1932, expanding its target market and facilities and patenting several variations on the original design to improve filtration and mileage. FRAM released a filter for synthetic oil in 2012.
