In 2010, the postage rate for a 1-ounce domestic letter was 44 cents. The 44-cent charge was instituted on May 11, 2009 and lasted until Jan. 22, 2012.
For postcards, the postage rate in 2010 was 28 cents. Although the rate for a domestic letter did not go up again until 2012, the rate for a postcard went up to 29 cents in April of 2011. In the year 2000, the postage rate was 33 cents, and by 2010 had increased a total of 11 cents. Postage rates rose steadily for domestic letters in the first decade of the 21st century, with increases in 2001 and 2002, and then one every year from 2006 through 2009.
