Why were Samsung over-the-range microwaves recalled?

In 2009, Samsung over-the-range microwaves were recalled because some units had a capacitor that may have been installed in an incorrect location. As a result of the defect, affected models posed a risk of shock.

The specific defect leading to the recall involved an installation bolt contacting the terminal on the capacitor of the ventilation motor on some installations. A remote risk of shock was present in some circumstances when the power cord was connected to an ungrounded outlet. The recall applied to all units produced in January 2009 to May 2009. Units produced in June 2009 were also recalled; however, the defect was not present in all models.
