Two popular sports in the 1950s were boxing and baseball. The success of baseball during this period was due in large part to the invention of television, which made it possible to enjoy viewing games from the comfort of home. Hockey, football and golf were not as favored but were growing in popularity, and college football was more popular than pro football at the time.
Baseball superstars included Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle and Ernie Banks, and it was a successful decade for the New York Yankees. In boxing, Rocky Marciano remained undefeated between 1952 and 1956. Other boxers of the era were Sugar Ray Robinson, Archie Moore and Sandy Saddler.
