Counting the number of bolts on the wheels and measuring the distance between bolt holes is a useful way of finding the bolt pattern specification on a vehicle. Alternatively, online resources such as WheelLugPattern.com, MyBoltPattern.com, Roadkill Customs and Discounted Wheel Warehouse provide bolt pattern specifications by car makes and models.

Bolt configuration comprises of two numbers; the first digit indicates the number of bolts on the wheel and the second digit indicates the distance of the bolt holes from each other, according to Wheel-Size.com. Most vehicles have bolt patterns of 4, 5, 6 and 8 lugs. Consequently, a bolt pattern of 5 x 5" indicates that there are five bolts on the wheel and the bolt holes are placed 5 inches apart.

To determine the distance between even bolt holes patterns, measure the distance between the centers of two lug holes in the 12 and 6 o’clock positions with a ruler or tape measure, says Four Wheeler Network. An odd-numbered bolt pattern requires a different approach; measurement is taken from the edge of a bolt hole to the center of the bolt hole directly across from it. Alternatively, one can measure the from the center of a bolt hole to the center of the bolt hole that is directly across from it and multiply the resultant measurement by 1.05.
