Are white squirrels rare?

The vast majority of squirrels are dark brown, which makes white squirrels rare. However, in certain parts of the United States and other countries, white squirrels are common.

About 20 percent of squirrels with white fur are actually albinos. Albino squirrels are generally not counted as white squirrels. An albino squirrel has a pink or red tint in its eyes.

U.S. locations known for having white squirrels include Marionville, Mo., Brevard, N.C., Olney, Ill., Kenton, Tenn. and Charlotte, N.C. The tendency for squirrels to be born white is thought to be the result of their lack of natural predators in areas populated by humans.
