Whole house fan switches are practical because they are installed in the living area of the home to easily control the fan in the attic. The fans are sometimes called attic fans and are efficient at cooling a home while reducing energy costs at the same time.

Whole house fans are used with at least one open window on every floor of the home. The fan draws cooler air into the home, forcing the warmer air outside through the roof vents. They work best in parts of the country that normally have cooler nights, even in summer. The fan switches must be clearly labeled so the fan isn't accidentally turned on during the day, causing it to pull hot air in.
