When was wifi invented?

Wi-Fi dates back to a 1985 decision by the Federal Communications Commission that freed up three bands of the radio spectrum for unlicensed use, but the standard itself was created by NCR corporation and AT&T in 1991. Vic Hayes, known as "the Father of Wi-Fi," is regarded its chief inventor.

The original Wi-Fi system was called WaveLAN and was designed for cashier systems and point-of-sale terminals. It featured wireless bandwidth of up to two megabits per second and was the basis for what would become the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers standards 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g, each generation exceeding the previous in range and bandwidth.
