What is a Wing Chun dummy?

A Wing Chun dummy is a training tool for practicing several forms of Chinese martial arts. Extending from a central pole, the dummy typically has three arm-like posts and one lower extension referred to as a leg. The design is meant to replicate sparring with a human partner.
Earlier forms of the dummy were normally built outdoors by placing a large wooden pole in a tightly packed gravel pit. The modern forms come from an adaptation designed by legendary martial arts instructor Yip Man. He modified the dummy to allow for easier placement in the urban setting of Hong Kong. Originally made from wood, the apparatus is now often made from plastic and metal.
