What is a winner-take-all election?

A winner-take-all election is when the political candidate who receives the most number of votes wins the election. It is the predominant method of voting in the United States.

One of the advantages of the winner-take-all system is that it promotes more stable elections between two candidates or political parties, which can make choosing a candidate simpler for voters. On the other hand, this kind of system often can discourage third-party candidates, which limits the choice of voters. Only two U.S. states, Nebraska and Maine, do not participate in the winner-take-all elections. They instead use proportional voting to elect candidates.
