What is a Wifi connection?

A Wi-Fi connection allows electronic devices to connect to the Internet and communicate without the use of cords or wires. Wi-Fi, an industry term for a type of wireless local area network protocol based on the 802.11 IEEE network standard, is the most popular means of wireless communication today.

Wi-Fi radios transmit at either 2.5 gigahertz or 5.0 gigahertz. This higher frequency allows the signal to support more data than what is produced by phones, televisions and walkie-talkies. It is a common misconception that "Wi-Fi" stands for "wireless infidelity." In fact, is it a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance, which is an international affiliation of companies associated with wireless LAN technologies and products.
