How do you wipe a computer?

Use Darik's Boot and Nuke, known as DBAN, or a similar third-party program to wipe a computer and delete all files from the drive. You only need a wiping program, a Windows-based computer, a blank CD or flash drive and an ISO burning software to complete the process.

1. Back up your files

   Back up your important files to a blank CD or a flash drive. You can also use Dropbox or a similar cloud-based service to upload your files for backup.

2. Download DBAN

   Download the DBAN program from SourceForge. DBAN is designed to delete all files from a drive no matter the type or format.

3. Install an ISO burner

   Download PowerISO or a similar ISO burning software. Follow the instructions to install the program, and launch it after installation.

4. Burn DBAN

   Insert a blank CD into the computer disc tray, or plug in a flash drive to a USB port. Mount the DBAN image in the ISO program, and burn it to the disc or flash drive. Do not just extract DBAN to a flash drive.

5. Wipe the hard drive

   Open DBAN using the flash drive or the new CD. Once the main menu appears, follow the on-screen prompts to wipe the hard drive.
