How do you wire a generator to a house?

To wire a generator to a house, install a transfer switch next to the breaker box. During a power outage, the generator plugs into the transfer switch and circuits are able to receive power from the generator without the use of extension cords.
A licensed and experienced electrician should be the one to install the transfer switch.
Step 1: Mount the unit
The transfer switch should be mounted next to the existing electrical panel.
Step 2: Turn off the electricity
Turn off the electricity to the whole house at the electrical panel. Then, connect the wires from the transfer switch to the breakers.
Step 3: Drill a hole
Drill a 1 1/2-inch diameter hole from the home's exterior to the interior.
Step 4: Install the electrical box
Screw on the transfer switch's electrical box over the interior hole.
Step 5: Run a cable
Run the electrical cable to the transfer switch from the electrical box.
Step 6: Connect the cable
Connect the electrical cable to the transfer switch's electrical receptacle and screw the receptacle onto the electrical box.
Step 7: Connect the transfer switch
Connect the receptacle cable and transfer switch.
Step 8: Plug in the generator
Ensure the transfer switch was installed properly by plugging in the generator and testing the circuits while the power is still shut off at the main electrical panel.
A transfer switch connects to the main electrical panel and allows a generator to operate specific circuits, even when the power is out.
