A wireless router is a device designed to connect multiple wireless devices together in a private network. A router allows communications between these devices and the Internet when a cable modem is connected to the router. Wireless routers have antennae for sending and receiving radio frequency information from connected devices.
Connecting to a wireless router requires a network security key, which can be set once the device has been installed. As of 2014, newer models of wireless router provide separate network connections for home devices and guests to keep data on the home devices protected. Most wireless routers also have ports on the back for wired Ethernet connections to the network, which are useful for devices that require greater stability or bandwidth that are located near the router.
