A wireless router is a device that allow wireless devices to connect to the Internet and communicate with other devices in a home or office network. It combines three network components, including an access point, router and switch.
Examples of wireless routers include mobile broadband routers, Virgin Media Super Hub and BT Home Hub. A router allocates a unique IP address to each device connected to the network. The access point is the base station that receives wireless network signals.
A wireless router is also used to facilitate VoIP calls and digital TVs. Most routers protect network users by blocking unauthorized access with built-in firewalls.
