What is a witch hazel shrub?

Witch hazel shrubs are deciduous, vase-shaped plants that bloom in early spring. These shrubs can grow as tall as 12 feet without proper and timely pruning.
Witch hazel shrubs can be used to complement other plants in a four-season garden as the shrubs bloom earlier than most other plants and have leaves that turn yellow in the fall. Their yellow flowers have fringe-like petals and give off a warm, spicy fragrance. Witch hazel shrubs must grow in partial shade or full sun and must have well-drained, acidic soil to thrive. Mulch placed around the base of these shrubs protects them from the harsh summer sun and from harsh winters.
