Witch hazel is commonly used as a treatment for hemorrhoids and is also used for minor bleeding and skin irritation, according to WebMD. When applied to the skin, it can relieve irritation, burning, discomfort and itching caused by anal disorders and hemorrhoids.
Witch hazel cream is not as effective as hydrocortisone at relieving mild skin irritation, according to WebMD. However, some research has shown that witch hazel ointment is as effective as dexpanthenol ointment in improving symptoms of irritated skin or skin injury. A 14-day application showed that witch hazel was ineffective for itching or inflamed skin associated with eczema.
