Why do women wear slips?

By Forinfos - 17/07/2025 - 0 comments

Women wear slips under skirts and dresses to prevent clinging, allow the dress to hang properly, protect outer clothing from perspiration damage, provide warmth and prevent undergarments from showing through the material. Full slips hang from the shoulders, while half slips hang from the waist.

The first use of the word slip in reference to clothing dates back to the 1550s, where it was used to mean edge of a garment. The modern-day slip was first worn in the early 20th century and originated from the chemise and petticoat. Basic slips come in beige, white or black and often have a lace trim at the hem. Common fabrics used include rayon, nylon, silk, polyester and cotton.
