Who won the 1778 Battle of Kaskaskia in the American Revolution?

Under Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark of the Virginia militia, the Americans won the 1778 Battle of Kaskaskia in the American Revolution. This triumph, along with Lieutenant Colonel Clark's victory at Vincennes, was important in helping to fortify what was then considered the Northwest against British occupation.

Following extensive planning, the Battle of Kaskaskia took place in the Illinois country with a surprise attack by Clark and his men. Though short on manpower, Clark and his men, numbering about 175, took the fort at Kaskaskia and occupied the area without even needing to fire any shots on July 4, 1778.
