Refractory tables are commonly used for informal and formal dining areas as well as decorative and functional tables for foyers, entryways, hallways and other living areas. The style of tables were originally used by monastery refectories for dining in medieval times and later for banquets and feasts in noble residences.

Refractory tables are highly elongated with pedestal-style legs that spread out at the bottom for maximum stability. Some of the current models of tables are constructed with expansion leaves that allow the table to be lengthened should the need arise. Modern refractory tables are available in many sizes and different styles, including French and Spanish-influenced.
