Reverend John Newton Brown, an influential publisher, teacher and Baptist minister, wrote the Church Covenant in 1853. The Church Covenant is partly based on the New Hampshire Baptist Confession of Faith, which Brown co-authored in 1833.

Brown wrote the Baptist Church Covenant as a milder version of the Calvinistic beliefs of the time. It was adopted by many Baptist congregations in the northern and western United States as a clear, concise statement and confession of faith.

Brown, born in Connecticut in 1803, was ordained in 1824, one year after graduating at the head of his class at Madison College. He served as minister throughout New England before moving to a ministry in Lexington, Virginia, in 1845.
