Does Xbox 360 play Blu-ray Discs?

Xbox 360 consoles do not support Blu-ray disc playback. However, all Xbox 360 consoles do play DVDs. Each console follows international standards and is manufactured under a specific DVD region. The Xbox 360 also supports most digital movie file formats, such as AVI and MP4.

Xbox 360 consoles previously supported an external HD-DVD player. The external player connected to the console using a USB connection. The external HD-DVD player was discontinued in February 2008, after Toshiba announced the discontinuation of all HD DVD players. Xbox One consoles do include a built-in Blu-ray player. Users are prompted to install the Blu-ray player app when inserting a Blu-ray disc for the first time.
