Can the Xbox 360 console play AVI files?

The Xbox 360 console is capable of playing AVI files. A multimedia update for the Xbox 360 console in the fall of 2007 added support for DivX and XviD video, which allowed for the playing of AVI files.

Assuming Xbox 360 users have added the update from 2007, they should have no trouble playing the majority of the AVI files that can be found on the Internet. To get this update, Xbox 360 users must have the latest Dashboard update installed. After this, the user should attempt to play an AVI file, which prompts the system to begin the process of installing the update.
