Albert T. Marshall of Brockton, Mass., was issued a patent on Aug. 8, 1899 for his household refrigeration device. Several other refrigeration systems had been invented previously, but Marshall’s was the first to be patented in the United States.
Although artificial refrigeration had been demonstrated decades earlier, American Oliver Evans is believed to have invented the first refrigeration machine in 1805. Other inventors credited with making significant advances to refrigeration systems were Jacob Perkins (1834) and John Gorrie (1844). Carl von Linden was a German engineer who was issued a patent in 1876 for the process of liquefying gas, which is part of basic refrigeration technology.
