Puerto Rico is not independent as of February 2015. The island is a territory of the United States; it was previously under the rule of the Spanish Empire.

Puerto Rico was a colony of the Spanish Empire for approximately 400 years. In 1860, a push toward independence started on the island. For the next 28 years, Puerto Ricans pushed for political reforms, national political party systems and the end of slavery. During this period, Spain's military and economic power began to dwindle across Europe. Following the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898, the island was transferred to the control of the United States.
