In Ethiopia, the calendar lags roughly seven years behind that of Europe and North America; in 2013 Ethiopians celebrated the coming of 2006 and in 2014 the coming of 2007. The New Year in Ethiopia falls on September 11 or September 12 in the case of a leap year.

The Ethiopian calendar follows the Julian model rather than the Gregorian model adopted by much of the rest of the world. As such, they count 12 months consisting of 30 days each plus a thirteenth month of either five or six days depending on whether or not it is a leap year. Christmas is celebrated on January 7, similar to the Coptic and Orthodox churches.
