The Golden Temple started being built in 1589, and was completed in 1601. The temple is known by several names in Sikhism including "Sri Harmandir Sahib," which means "Temple of God."

The Golden Temple is considered the holiest site for the Sikh religion in Punjab, India. The name of the city, Amritsar, where the temple was built, derived its name from the holy water tank that surrounds it called Amrit Sarovar, which means "Pool of Holy Nectar." The temple's construction, initiated by Guru Ram Das, was completed by his son in-law, Guru Arjan Dev, who later compiled the holy scripture of Sikhism called "Guru Granth Sahib."
