What year was Oxford University founded?

The founding date for the University of Oxford is unknown, but teaching at Oxford dates back to at least as early as 1096 A.D. Oxford holds the distinction of being the oldest university in the English-speaking world.

In 1167, King Henry II banned English students from enrolling at the University of Paris, which resulted in the rapid development of the University of Oxford. The historian Gerald of Wales gave a reading to Oxford dons in 1188. A chancellor was named as the head of the university starting from at least 1201. A royal charter was granted to the university in 1248 during King Henry III's reign. The first foreign student was Emo of Friesland, who arrived in 1190.
