In what year was America founded?

America was founded on July 4, 1776 with the issue of the Declaration of Independence. In the document the 13 English colonies in America described grievances held against the King of England and his government.

Thomas Jefferson, future President of the United States, wrote the Declaration of Independence during the summer of 1776. In it he outlined the justifications for the colonies declaring independence. Among these were issues of taxation, maintaining standing armies in the colonies, and lack of representation. He wrote that all men are created equal, that they are given "certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
