The Moorish Science Temple of America was established in 1925 and was legally incorporated under the laws of Illinois November 29, 1926. The name was changed from Moorish Temple of Science to the Moorish Science Temple of America May 1928, to follow the requirements of the Illinois Secretary of State.

The Moorish Science Temple of America was founded by Timothy Drew, who was known by the followers as Prophet Noble Drew Ali. The organization's mission is to help uplift fallen humanity and to teach the things that help make members of the organization better citizens. Their philosophy is inspired by the Koran.
