When was America founded?

The United States formally declared independence from Great Britain on July 4, 1776. This date is considered the birthday of the United States as a nation. However, the first declaration was approved by Congress on July 2, 1776.

The first successful English settlement in North America was Jamestown, Va., founded in 1607. By 1732, all 13 colonies that made up the original United States had been founded. The colonies began the war for independence in 1775. On Sept. 9, 1776, the Continental Congress formally adopted the name of the "United States," replacing the "United Colonies" that had been used before.
