Jamestown in Virginia was founded in 1607 by English settlers who were funded by the Virginia Company and granted a charter by King James I. In honor of the king, the settlers and company named their settlement after him.
The settlers of Jamestown suffered through many hardships, including diseases, starvation and raids by the Algonquian Indian tribes that surrounded the area. But the Powhatan tribe provided the settlers with food in exchange for trinkets and tools. In 1609, the settlers struggled through a brutal winter in which only 60 of the 214 residents survived through the cold. The original settlement included a church, a storefront and a few houses, all enclosed in a three-sided wooden fort.
