The Yucatan Peninsula crater is an ancient impact crater that is located beneath the peninsula and centered around the small fishing village Chicxulub, several miles from the port town of Progreso. The asteroid impact that formed the crater occurred at the end of the Cretaceous, some 65 million years ago.

The Chicxulub crater is roughly 180 kilometers in diameter and 10 kilometers deep. There is strong evidence that the impact crater was formed by either an asteroid or a comet. The impact that formed the Yucatan Peninsula crater triggered global climate change that is believed to have caused the extinction of over half of the species living on Earth at the time, including the dinosaurs.
