When was zinc discovered?

Zinc was first discovered as a new metal in 1374 in India. The metal was used in the brass manufacturing process and was produced in Zawar, India, from the 12th to 16th century. Both zinc metal and zinc oxide were produced at this location.

Prior to the discovery of zinc in India, its ores were used for medicine and brass compounds during the era of Augustus in Rome, which was between 20 B.C. and 14 A.D. Zinc was not recognized in Europe as a separate metal until the 16th century, when it was observed and produced as "zincum" by Agricola in Slesia.
