Although $100,000 notes were printed in the 1930s, they were only used for transactions between branches of the Federal Reserve Bank and were never issued to the public. The U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing issued $100,000 Gold Certificates between Dec. 18, 1934 and Jan. 9, 1935.
The $100,000 Gold Certificates were issued only against gold bullion held by the U.S. Treasury. The note had a portrait of Woodrow Wilson on the front. Seven of the 1934 $100,000 notes still exist, as does one uncut sheet of 12 notes and a few other specimen notes. The largest denomination of U.S. currency ever circulated publicly was the $10,000 note, last printed in 1945.
