Snowmobilers contest the International 500 race each winter in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, in Chippewa County on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The city of 14,000 people is located in the northeastern corner of the state, across the St. Mary's River from Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, Canada.
The city hosts the I-500 each year on the first Saturday in February. The I-500 is the world's largest snowmobile race, and the city hosts events throughout the week leading up to the race. Although the city is relatively isolated, racing fans can travel to the area via regular commercial flights between Detroit and Chippewa County International Airport.
