What are I-94 departure records?

The I-94 departure records are paper forms that Customs Border Protection officers issue nonimmigrants after examining their passports and visas. The record indicates a traveller's duration of stay and proves that the holder is in the country legally, according to the Berkeley International Office.
When a nonimmigrant arrives in the United States through a land border port, a Customs and Border Protection officer inspects his documents, stamps them and issues Form I-94. The form contains arrival and departure information of the nonimmigrant, states the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency. Travellers use the form to verify their immigration status and their eligibility for employment.
