According to the Bible, Abraham is the father of the Jewish people and Judaism. He made a covenant with God, who promised Abraham would be the father of a great nation. He is an ancestor of Jesus Christ.
Abraham’s story is told in Genesis, chapters 11 through 25. The Biblical account shows his name was originally Abram, which means exalted father, but was changed by God to Abraham, meaning father of a multitude, following the covenant. God promised a 75-year-old Abraham and his 65-year-old wife Sarah they would become parents. Their only child together, Isaac, was born when Abraham was 100 and Sarah was 90. Abraham fathered seven other sons, most notably Ishmael, with two other women.
