The acronym "NPI" stands for National Provider Identifier, a unique identification number that is assigned to health care providers. The NPI is 10 digits long, and the numbers carry no information about the provider, such as the state of residence or medical specialty.

According to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, a health care provider must share his NPI number with those who need it for billing purposes, including other health care providers, clearinghouses and health plans. Individuals can also look up NPI numbers by entering information about the provider, such as his first name, last name, or the city, state or ZIP code of his practice.
