How do you adjust a pilot light?

In order to adjust a pilot light, it must be properly lit and its adjustment screw turned until the flame is 3/8 of an inch. Most modern heating devices no longer require pilot lights and instead use an electrical ignition system, which helps the stove top or burner from wasting unused energy.

Pilot lights have been in use since the early colonial days, as an ignition source for older stove top burners and fireplaces. Modern uses include appliances such as commercial grade stoves, water heaters, central heating systems, home fire places, flame throwers and hot air balloons. The following instructions explain how to safely light and adjust a pilot light on a modern range.

1. Make sure the appliance is set to "off"

Inspect each knob on the appliance and make sure they are all turned to "off."

2. Access the pilot light

Remove anything covering access to the pilot light, such as a broiler carriage or cooktop.

3. Light the pilot ports

Take a match and light the pilot ports.

4. Locate the adjustment screw

The pilot adjustment screw will be located behind the flame. Use the pilot line as a guide to find it.

5. Tighten the adjustment screw

Gently tighten the adjustment screw and measure the pilot flame. It should be approximately 3/8 of an inch in height. If the flame is too low, loosen the adjustment screw.

6. Reinstall the cooktop

Once finished adjusting the pilot flame, re-install the cooktop or broiler carriage.
