What is an adult group home?

Adult group homes are residential care facilities where disabled adults can be cared for 24 hours a day. Group homes tend to be private homes that are located in residential areas and offer a comfortable, nonclinical environment for residents, according to HowStuffWorks.

Unlike skilled nursing or memory care facilities, adult group homes offer long-term care in a residential setting, though skilled caregivers are still present around the clock. Increasing residents' independence is one of the main goals of group-home care, according to the Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders. Group home staff members often take an active role in teaching residents life skills such as cooking, cleaning and self-care.
