What is a Microsoft HomeGroup?

Microsoft introduced the feature known as HomeGroup in Windows 7, allowing for ad-hoc networking between computers belonging to a group called a homegroup. The feature makes it simple for inexperienced users to share digital content between devices within a home network safely.
Media, such as pictures and documents, can be easily copied between Windows computers within a homegroup. Device access, including printer use, can also be shared between homegroup members. This arrangement is easier than configuring machines individually and is more convenient than creating a network or setting up a local file server for sharing content.
Homegroups are also password-protected, so that third parties cannot add computers to a homegroup without knowing the password.
