Group homes are out-of-home placement options for children in foster care who are unable to be placed in traditional foster homes due to significant emotional or behavioral problems, according to the California Department of Social Services. These homes are designed for restrictive care with 24-hour monitoring.
The CDSS explains that group homes can be large, institutional environments or small home environments with a house parent model. The primary function of most of these facilities is the eventual emancipation of each resident. Some group homes cater to individuals with chronic disabilities who are unable to live with their families or independently, according to Wikipedia.
