What is "after 5" attire for men?

After 5 attire, also known as cocktail attire, is designed to be worn to semi-formal events outside of the office, such as parties or dinner dates. For men, an appropriate after 5 outfit consists of slacks, a button down shirt, a blazer and an optional tie.

There is some overlap between work clothing and after 5 attire, but men dressing for an after 5 event can be a little more creative and flashy in their choice of colors and patterns. Ties, vests and other accessories in contrasting colors are acceptable. A jacket is not a required component of after 5 attire, but it is encouraged, especially at evening events.
