A baby can start using a walker between the ages of 6 and 12 months. A baby walker is a device designed with wheels to help babies with mobility.
Although the purpose of a baby walker is to help a non-walking child learn to walk, walkers can pose a risk of injury to babies, according to the Mayo Clinic. Some possible injuries associated with baby walkers are that they can tip over or fall down stairs.
Baby walkers may also delay a child's ability to start walking, crawling or sitting properly. Similarly, the use of baby walkers may delay motor and mental development, according to the Mayo Clinic. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that children should not use baby walkers.
