At what age do babies start talking?

Most babies learn to speak before the age of 2. Some babies usually start saying their first words by 12 to 15 months. At this age, babies might only say one or two words. Most babies also learn to follow simple one-step directions around this age.

At 18 to 24 months, most toddlers can say about 20 to 50 words. At 24 months, most toddlers start to combine two words to make simple sentences. At 24 months, a toddler can also usually identify common objects. From 2 to 3 years old, the child's speech increases to three or more words per sentence.
