At what age can children take turns?

Children can start learning to take turns during the toddler phase, according to What to Expect. The Labor of Love states that a child is a toddler at the age of 1, and the child remains a toddler throughout his second year of life.
What to Expect explains that toddlers develop a sense of ownership and feel that everything belongs to them. They can learn to share while still exhibiting independence by being gently encouraged to share. This can include asking the toddler's permission before giving one of his toys to another child. Showing the toddler positive attention and explaining to the toddler that every item he likes does not belong to him can also help him learn to take turns.
